Who We Serve
The Hive MD serves individuals and families navigating complex, long-term challenges rooted in generational trauma. Whether you're justice-involved, in recovery, or working to change patterns before they continue - if you're ready for ongoing relationships and community-based support, The Hive is for you.
We Serve Families Navigating:
-
Justice involvement (current or former incarceration, probation, parole)
-
Child welfare involvement (family separation, custody challenges, reunification)
-
Addiction & recovery (active use, treatment, or sustained recovery)
-
Generational trauma patterns (cycles you're working to interrupt)
We serve Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Carroll County, Howard County,
and Montgomery County.
Why Safety Matters
The Crisis Behind Crime, Addiction, and Family Separation
At The Hive, our participants have an average ACE score of 7—more than three times higher than the general population. That's not a measure of character. It's a measure of childhood trauma.
ACE scores (Adverse Childhood Experiences) predict incarceration, substance use, mental health struggles, and chronic health problems. A score of 7 means their nervous systems were wired for survival, not safety. They didn't fail at making good choices—they never learned what calm, regulated decision-making feels like.
You can't behavior-modify a nervous system that's been wired for threat. You have to create the safety that was stolen first. That's what we do.
When someone's nervous system finally feels safe:
-
Violence becomes unnecessary (crime prevention)
-
Regulation becomes possible (addiction recovery)
-
Connection becomes safe (family preservation)
-
Cycles can be interrupted (generational healing)
This is how we prevent harm at its root.
Our four programs address the five dimensions of safety that people with ACE scores of 7 have never experienced:
When all five dimensions of safety are created—physical, emotional, relational, neurological, and community—nervous systems heal. That's when crime stops. Families stay intact. Cycles break.
J'S CLOSET:
Meets immediate needs without shame or barriers. Dignity matters for nervous system healing. When someone can show up to a job interview in clean clothes, that's a moment of safety their body registers.
RAISING RESILIENCE:
Teaches nervous system regulation skills—grounding, trigger recognition, emotional control. You can't make calm decisions when dysregulated. We teach people how to get their prefrontal cortex back online.
ROOTS & WINGS:
Secures housing, employment, food, and crisis support. When survival needs are met, nervous systems can finally settle. Physical safety allows emotional and relational safety to develop.
PHOENIX LEAGUE:
Brings families together for recreational activities and positive experiences. Joy and play aren't extras—they're how nervous systems learn that connection can be safe. Positive memories rewire what "family" means.

“I’ve spent most of my life navigating systems that weren’t built for people like me—systems that gaslight, that punish instead of repair, that tell you healing is for someone else. But then I found Katie and The Hive.
It gave me something I didn’t think I’d find in this lifetime: faith—not in the broken system, but in what’s possible when people like Katie create new ones. Her model doesn’t just sound good on paper. It feels good in real life. It’s raw. It’s honest. It’s built by someone who understands the ache from the inside out...
Because of Katie’s work, I’ve felt less alone in my story. Because of her, I’ve watched hope take root in the cracks I thought were permanent. The Hive didn’t fix me—because I was never broken. It just reminded me that I was always worth rebuilding around.”

As humans, we are wired for connection. In the absence of love and belonging, there is always suffering. At The Hive, we believe that everyone deserves a second chance and a sense of belonging. We are dedicated to providing a supportive environment for individuals impacted by incarceration, addiction, and trauma. Our team of professionals is committed to helping our community members heal and move forward in their lives. We strive to create communities where family interventions, like foster care and incarceration, are rare and brief and not the norm.
